IBOPE Zogby Poll: Majorities Support Keystone Oil Pipeline & Think Need Outweighs Environmental Issues
UTICA, NY – A majority of US voters (57%) support construction of the 1,700 mile Keystone XL oil pipeline that would run from Canada to refineries in Texas, a new IBOPE Zogby survey finds.
Just over half (51%) of likely voters say Keystone would reduce dependence on Middle Eastern oil, while a third (32%) think the project has not been studied enough to know the environmental impacts. Also, 61% say continued production of fossil fuels is necessary until alternative sources become cheaper and more available.
The Keystone pipelinewould transport fossil fuels from the Athabasca Oil Sands in northeastern Alberta to destinations in the U.S. In December 2011, Congress voted to give the Obama Administration a 60-day deadline to make a decision on application for the construction of the project. On January 18, 2012, President Barack Obama rejected the application, stating that the deadline for the decision had "prevented a full assessment of the pipeline's impact."
IBOPE Zogby interactive poll conducted from January 20-24 finds Democrats differ from both Republicans and independent voters by opposing the pipeline by more than two-to-one, and 58% agree that environmental concerns outweigh dependence on Middle East oil. Democrats are split as to whether continued fossil fuel production is necessary. Meanwhile, 90% of Republicans say they support construction of the Keystone XL project.

Please tell us which statement closest matches your own opinion about the Keystone XL project?
Statement A: New oil pipelines continue our dependence on fossil fuels and should not be supported for that reason alone.
Statement B: Until alternative energy becomes cheaper and more available, we should continue to support production of nearby fossil fuel sources.
