Two Business Surveys Conducted in Brazil

Two back-to-back surveys of business owners (348 in 1997, 300 in 1998) reveal the up side and the down size of Brazil’s economic potential through the eyes of those in business. Retail, wholesale, manufacturing, service, and financial industries were included in the surveys. Some highlights:

1997

“The results of the Reuters/Zogby Business Confidence Index Survey in Brazil show a remarkable optimism in the business and financial sectors of the country. Literally all factors of the economy –business growth, employment, profits, gross revenues, etc. – drew a majority of positive responses. Seventy to eighty percent of respondents expect their business sales to increase. Fifty-six percent to sixty-six percent expect net revenues to increase.”

1998

“Results indicate that business executives feel the economy will improve for key economic variables. In the January 1998 survey, 89.5% of business executives expect sales to increase or stay the same: 84.4% of executives expect sales to stay the same or increase in 1999. However, summary compilation of the answers and a comparison between July ’97 and January ’98 indicates some increase of business executive uncertainty about the future.

§ Those predicting an increase in sales in the near term, and for 1999, decreased from July 1997 to January 1998.

§ Those who think sales will increase in the future fell 7.4% in January over July.

§ Those who expect an increase in sales in 1999 fell 8% from July.”

Both reports offer a keen insight into the economic situation in Brazil in recent years. Combined with current data, it can provide a tracking mechanism for future economic endeavors there.
